The “úŒŽàK (Ri yue tan = Sun-Moon Lake) is located at the central part of Taiwan. It is famous for its beautiful scenery and more than twenty hotels in the area have welcomed many tourists from all over the world. The lake has also been working as a reservoir of dam. The core of the dam bank structure is the 40 m high RC wall built by Japanese engineers more than 60 years ago.
The earthquake caused a couple of crevice in the soil part of the dam bank in front and at the back of RC wall. The soil part showed some settlement as well.
The water in the lake is carried through two pipes to a power plant. A couple of pedestal supporting plates of the water pipe were impaired. The damage may not affect seriously the overall functioning of dam.
On the contrary hotels in this area were heavily damaged. None could escape from the damage and some completely collapsed.
