台中港 (Taichung gang = Port of Taichung)

In General:

The Port of Taichung was opened as a multi-purpose port in 1983 and has been playing an important role in the international trade as well as the domestic development since then. There are altogether 39 wharves and the damage due to the Earthquake is limited only to wharves with caisson foundation. 30 wharves with pile foundation showed good resistance with very little damage. The picture below shows the damaged part of 北碼頭區 (Beimatougu = North Wharf).
Since the sea wall is supported by caisson foundation, the settlement and damage of wharf is large. In addition, the backyard, being built as reclaimed land, showed liquefaction and quick sand phenomenon.

Diagnosis:

The damages of the wharves seem to be minimal and can be repaired within a short time.
